Installation#

Trial Mode#

A licence file can be obtained from your INSUL distributor to allow a temporary trial of INSUL.

To obtain this licence please email your contact details to your local distributor. The distributor will email you the licence file which will allow restricted use for a limited period.

Multiple Users#

By default, when INSUL is installed on a computer it is configured for use by the person who installed it. This includes storing INSUL display settings and User Materials files in the relevant Windows User account.

  • If several people wish to use INSUL on the same computer some extra setup may be required. INSUL installs its materials databases to two different locations.
  • The INSUL databases (which cannot be edited) are installed to [CommonAppData].
  • The User databases (which the user can modify and which INSUL new releases do not usually modify) are installed to [AppData].

Terminal Services#

Attention

INSUL is not designed to run under terminal services or remote desktop.

The preferred method for more than one user to operate INSUL is to install INSUL to local computers and access a licence from the network key via the local network or VPN.

For example, the network key could be physically plugged into a suitable computer that runs all the time and is accessible to all users, but users would run a local copy of INSUL on their local computer and point the Licence Manager to the IP address or network name of the computer where the network key is plugged in and the Licence Manager is running.

Network Version#

INSUL can be used on a network if a network licence has been purchased.

Many copies of INSUL can be installed on client machines but only a pre-determined number may be run at once. A special USB network key (coloured red rather than purple as for the single user key) is connected to the USB port of one computer on the network. The Licence manager software is installed on this computer to monitor the number of copies of INSUL that may run at any one time. Multiple licences can be purchased so that several copies of INSUL can be run at once if desired.

The network key can be plugged into any available computer, it doesn’t much matter which but it is better if this computer is always on and at a network address that is available to all users that want to use INSUL. A server computer is often a good candidate for holding the network key because it is always likely to be available (ie it’s not turned off at the end of the day) and it will be at a position on the network where remote users should be able to communicate with it.
