Saving#

It is possible to save the details of a construction for future reference. Click the SaveButton.png button on the INSUL Toolbar. This will open a Windows file dialog Box. Click in the filename Box and enter the name the file is to be saved as. To change to a different directory use the standard windows file directory tree to navigate to the desired directory.

INSUL save files use the file extension '.ixl'.

Note

From INSUL version 7.0, if a file extension is not included in the filename, the file will be saved as an .ixl INSUL file.

Prior to INSUL version 7.0, if a file extension was not included in the filename, the file was saved as an .ins INSUL file.

Saving philosophy#

INSUL's calculation algorithms are regularly upgraded to refine and improve predictions. In some cases this can mean that opening an INSUL file (.ins or .ixl) from an upgraded version of INSUL may produce a different (generally more accurate) set of results than the verion of INSUL that was originally used to create the file.

For this reason it is recommended to save a printout or PDF of an INSUL model at the same time as saving an INSUL (.ins or .ixl) file.

Example

Lets say that INSUL version 4.6 was used to calculate the transmission loss of a 150mm concrete panel and a .ins file was saved. Improvements to the calculation algorithms for concrete were made in INSUL Version 4.8. This means that if this file is opened from, say, INSUL version 6.0 the calculated transmission loss will still be for a 150mm concrete panel however the transmission loss results will be different (and generally improved) than those produced by INSUL version 4.6.

Loading#

A file may be recalled/loaded at a later stage by clicking on the OpenButton.png button on the INSUL Toolbar. This will open a Windows file dialog Box. Double click on a selected file or type its name into the edit Box and click Open.

Note

From INSUL version 7.0, information is stored in a file with an extension '.ixl' in XML format which can also be opened with a text editor or similar.

Prior to INSUL version 7.0, information was stored in a file with an extension '.ins', in text format.
